Golden Tip of the Week: Finding your own voice

1) Be able to express yourself verbally or in writing

You must be able to first write down what you think you want to be as a photographer.

Pinning it down might sounds stupid, but it is really the best way of telling yourself, what you really want. This way you have a clearer idea of what kind of direction in photography you might be heading towards.

2) Visual Diary

You can also keep a visual diary of writings/photographs/works of others that you really like and favours in your own file or book. This way, after collecting for a period of time, you will be able to keep track of what kind of pictures truly defines you. For example, if every photo you collected is Black and White, surely, BW defines you.

3) Look at alot of photos

Collecting images that appeals to you are very vital.

Try also find the common trends between them.

This way you will better find ways to improve your artistic sense.

4) Purchase the right equipment that support your vision

Equipment does make a difference! Get something that you need in order to take what you need. For example, a wedding photographer will find a 600mm F4 lens useless, while a wildlife photographer will be able to use it to make a difference likewise. So know what you want to take and get the correct things!

5) Have fun defining who you want to be! :)

Reflection 2009 Exhibtion

The South Zone Centre of Excellence for Design presents 'Reflection', a Youth Photo Competition, in collaboration with the National Geographic Store, Singapore.

This inaugural Photo Competition is open to all primary, secondary and integrated programme (IP) schools, junior colleges and Millenia Institude in Singapore.

All Winning Photos entries will be featured in a two-week exhibition from 26 May - 7 June 2009 at National Geographic Store, #01-19, VivoCity, 10am to 10pm

Canon IXUS 100 IS Digital Compact Camera

Canon’s Digital IXUS 100 IS (or PowerShot SD780 IS Digital ELPH as it’s known in North America) is a 12.1 Megapixel compact with a 3x optically-stabilised zoom and 2.5in screen. Announced in March 2009, it’s the successor to the IXUS 85 IS / PowerShot SD770 IS. The new model adds two extra Megapixels, HD video recording in the 720p format, an HDMI port for HD slideshows and Scene Recognition in Auto. At just 18.4mm thick, it’s also the slimmest compact in Canon’s current range.

While the higher resolution and auto scene detection are key improvements to the specification, the big new addition is High Definition, both for video capture and TV output. While Panasonic has offered HD capture and output (albeit with analogue component) for some time in its Lumix range, these are all brand new features for a Canon compact. Also new over its predecessor is Canon’s latest DIGIC 4 processor, which equips the IXUS 100 IS / SD780 IS with more efficient H.264 compression for movies, face detection with improved handling of profiles, and a Servo AF mode for tracking subjects in motion. It’s a powerful feature-set to find in such a small body, but the question as always is whether it can live up to the promise and deliver the goods in practice.

Kenneth Choo - Fashion Photography

Kenneth Choo provides high end fashion and commercial photography for advertising and editorial clients worldwide. He began his photographic journey during his university days, shooting for the university paper. His technical training combined with an artistic eye can be seen in the photographic quality and digital post-production that he often does himself.

Kenneth's strength in shooting fashion and portraiture are clearly seen in the works he produces. His keen eye for lighting, location and set design has allowed him to create powerful, beautiful images. He consistently shoots for renowned Singaporean stylist and fashion designer Kovit Ang and various top models and celebrities from Singapore.

His works can be seen in Changi Airport Singapore, Terminal 3 and is a contributor to other various publications.

Jino Lee - Travel Photography

A musician turned sound engineer turned photographer, Jino Lee went through many different industries before settling down as a photographer. At age 35, he is a late comer to the industry. However, he did not let his age stand in the way. He started working as a studio assistant in numerous studios, before finding his niche in travel photography.

Jino is currently Canon Singapore’s in-house Training and Program Executive, after 3 years of hard work. His role includes creating and facilitating training programs for Canon.

He also shoots events and weddings to hone his technique and keep current with the industry. When he’s not behind the lenses of his numerous cameras, he spends his free time with his loving family and three wonderful sons.

Chi Kuang Hwang - Finding a Voice in Photography

Chi Kuang’s career as a photographer started during his college days in Los Angeles. He worked as a photojournalist for a small town newspaper, enjoying the exciting and dynamic lifestyle.

He decided to forgo a regular pay check after four years to strike it out as a freelancer. He soon discovered his passion for shooting weddings and found a niche shooting with a documentary approach. Not long after, his company, 39 East was born.

Since then, 39 East has grown rapidly and has opened an office in California on January 2009 to penetrate the lucrative wedding photography market and help him push the creative boundaries of his work. Chi Kuang looks forward to the many opportunities and challenges that lie ahead of him in the years to come.

ASIAN LOMOGRAPHY FACES: A Lomography Exhibition

Photography is a magical media where photographers can express their marvelous experience to everyone. Apart from having fun with analogue photography, Lomographers also record every smiley face in their colourful daily life. “Shoot from waist level” is the motto of the supreme camera --- Lubitel 166+, which is an expert camera to take portraits.

In April and June, a group exhibition called “Asian Lomography Faces” will be held in the Lomography embassies in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand. A series of photographs were taken by the Lomography embassies in Asia Pacific region, to share their vision of their Lomography teammates, friends and the true Lomographers.

This summer, NUSPS invites all photographers to leap into the theme of Excite! and capture magical moments of excitement.

Be it to share, to inspire, to delight; we hope to see your images and there's prizes to boot.

Photographs like any artform can communicate and affects one's emotions. In contrast with traditional deep brooding themes, this year NUSPS invites participants to explore the power of this medium in a whole new way through the lively theme. Show us pictures that elicit a chuckle, a gasp and even stop a viewer in his tracks! Spread the cheer in this gloomy climate we say!

Categories include Open and Youth cateogories. Submission is open from 23 April 2009, 0900 to 23 May 2009, 2359hr. All participants are also invited to the open judging on 30 May 2009 in NUS Lecture Theatre 33; 1000hr (Youth), 1400hr (Open). In addition to attractive prizes, winners of the competition will have their prints exhibited during the Montage 2009 seminar and exhibition.

Ngee Ann Photography Competition & Exhibition 2009

Annual Ngee Ann Photography Exhibition has come back this year. It is now a photography competition together with an exhibition. Since 2005 to 2008, it was just a Photography Exhibition where entries will get at least one photo exhibited.

This year it was made into a competition with attractive prizes of up to $5000 to be won.

Closing Date: 22 May 2009

Instructions:
Participants can submit up to maximum of two(2) sets consiting of 4 pictures per set.
However, each participant is only subjected to winning 1 prize.

The themes are as follows:
a) Architecture
b) Nature/Underwater
c) Macro and Close-up
d) People
e) Sports
f) Night Scenes

The size of each print must be in 8R or super 8R. Each print must be mounted individually on cardboard with a 2.5cm (1in) border. Do not use protective covers for your prints.
